The Competition was tossed up as an idea around Origins 2004, inspired by the Piecepack Design Contests. Much mailing-list discussion ensued (notably Ryan McGuire, Mike Sugarbaker, Dan Isaac, Josh Kronengold, Allen Firstenberg, Greg Filpus, Andrew Plotkin, and anyone I forgot). At Origins, I (Andrew Plotkin) raised my hand and volunteered to stick it into the molten lead of fame, shielded only by the Leidenfrost Effect of... of... I can't make this metaphor work.

Even more discussion ensued, but I got a set of rules hammered out. The Competition was more or less officially announced on July 14th.
